Though magazines are certainly in transition, they are certainly not expired

The beauty and power of type and imagery came to me early. My love for the written word and for photography naturally led me to magazine design. And while magazines are certainly in transition, they’re far from extinct—what comes next will be fascinating to watch.

Although my career centered on magazine design, I also held a deep passion for teaching and for graphic design itself.

Inspiration was my constant pursuit. I pored over magazines, newspapers, books, and any printed material I could find—and inspiration always revealed itself. Type, in particular, captivated me. It’s an unusual fascination, perhaps, but I often spent lunch breaks with a type specimen book. The history of typography—its role in human communication, its changing forms and configurations—never stopped intriguing me. On a visit to Père Lachaise Cemetery outside Paris, I was the one who recognized and lingered at the family plot of the Didots, creators of the famed Didot typeface.

Teaching, when I discovered it, became the gift that kept giving. Students constantly revealed the emerging trends and aspirations of their generation. More often than not, I learned as much as I taught. It was a joy and a privilege to work with dedicated students of graphic design.
